# How to Edit ACF Fields from the Frontend in WordPress

Editing ACF fields in WordPress usually means opening wp-admin, finding the right post, scrolling to the custom fields, making changes, and saving. And if something doesn't look right? Back to the dashboard you go!

**But what if you could skip all that and edit ACF fields directly from the frontend?**

That's exactly what [Frontend Editor ACF](https://wpvibes.com/plugin/frontend-editor-acf/), a free plugin from WPVibes, lets you do. It opens your ACF fields in a side panel right on the page, so you can update field values without writing code or switching between the frontend and dashboard.

Sounds easier, right? And there's more! The plugin also supports ACF conditional logic, so fields can appear or disappear based on the values you select.

In this guide, we'll show you how to edit different ACF field types from the frontend, work with conditional fields, and set up the editor for your clients. We'll use a **5-Bedroom Luxury Villa** listing to walk you through the process.

## Why does updating ACF fields through wp-admin slow you down?

Updating ACF fields through wp-admin slows you down because every small change becomes a round trip. You edit values in the backend, where you can't see the design. Then you switch to the frontend to check the result, and go back again if something looks off.

On sites built around custom fields, those small changes never stop. Listing sites update prices and availability, product pages change specs, and team pages swap photos and job titles. Each update is quick on its own, but the back and forth adds up over a week of edits.

## What is Frontend Editor ACF and how does it work?

Frontend Editor ACF is a free WordPress plugin that lets you edit [Advanced Custom Fields](https://wordpress.org/plugins/advanced-custom-fields/) values from the frontend of your site. It adds an **Edit Fields** floating button to pages that have ACF fields, and clicking it opens every field group assigned to that page in a side panel.

Frontend Editor ACF works with both the free version of ACF and ACF Pro. It detects your existing field groups automatically, so there's nothing to configure before you start. It works on posts, pages and custom post types, and you never write a line of code.

For this example, we've already created a Property Listing custom post type and its ACF fields. The listing's fields cover the name, price, location, image, description, bedroom count, property type, plot size, amenities, two button labels and a button background color.

On the page, those values appear through the [DA - ACF Fields V2](https://wpbuilderaddons.com/docs/dynific-addons-elementor/widget/da-acf-fields-v2/) widget from Dynific Addons for Elementor. The two buttons use Elementor's Button widget. Their text comes from the **(DA) ACF Text** dynamic tag, and their background color comes from the **(DA) ACF Color** dynamic tag.

DA - ACF Fields V2 is one way to show ACF data in Elementor. If you'd rather use Elementor's Heading and other widgets, our guide on [how to display ACF fields in Elementor without Elementor Pro](https://wpbuilderaddons.com/tutorial/acf-fields-elementor-without-pro/) shows that approach.

## How do you edit ACF fields from the frontend?

To edit ACF fields from the frontend, open the page while logged in, click the **Edit Fields** button, change the values in the side panel, and save & refresh. Frontend Editor ACF applies your new values to the live page, so you can check the result without leaving it.

### Opening the editor panel

Visit the villa listing while logged in to an account that can edit it. A floating **Edit Fields** button appears on the page. Regular visitors never see it.

The button shows on single posts, pages, post, and any custom post type that have at least one ACF field group. Archive pages don't show it, and neither does a homepage unless it's a static page with its own field group.

Click the button and the editor panel slides in beside the page. The header shows the listing's title and how many fields the panel holds, with every field listed below it. Scroll inside the panel to reach the fields further down.

## Updating text and number fields

Text, textarea and number fields work like any simple form. Click into **Price** and type the new amount, or change the **Bedrooms** count if the listing changes.

**Property Name**, **Location** and **Property Description** edit the same way. A client can rewrite the listing description without ever touching the page layout.

You don't need to save after every field. Change as many fields as you like, and an **Unsaved changes** badge appears at the bottom of the panel to remind you there's work to save.

### Replacing the property image

The **Property Image** field shows a preview of the current photo with two icons on top. The pencil icon opens the WordPress Media Library, where you can pick or upload a new image, and the X icon removes the current one.

### Changing the property type and amenities

Choice fields appear in the panel just as they do in wp-admin. **Property Type** is a radio button field, so selecting Villa, Apartment or Studio changes the type shown in the listing's details box.

**Amenities** is a checkbox field. Tick Hospital and save, and it appears as a new tag next to Gym, Parking, Swimming Pool and Garden.

### Changing the button color

**Button Background** is an ACF Color Picker field. Pick a new color in the panel and save. The "Book This Property" button takes on that color, because its background comes from this field through the (DA) ACF Color dynamic tag.

The **Book Now Button** and **Explore More Button** fields are text fields, so you can rename either button from the same panel.

### Closing the panel without saving

To close the panel, click the **×** in the top right corner or the **Discard** button at the bottom. With no unsaved changes, the panel simply closes.

If you have unsaved edits, Frontend Editor ACF asks before closing. Choose **Keep editing** to go back to your changes, or **Discard changes** to close without saving, so an accidental click never wipes out your work.

## How does Frontend Editor ACF handle ACF conditional logic?

Frontend Editor ACF follows the conditional logic rules you set in ACF. When a field depends on another field's value, the panel shows or hides it the moment that value changes, exactly as it would in wp-admin.

[ACF Conditional logic](https://www.advancedcustomfields.com/resources/conditional-logic/) lets you show a field only when another field has a certain value. It keeps field groups tidy, because each entry only shows the fields that make sense for it.

### Conditional fields in the editor panel

The villa listing has a **Plot Size** field that only applies to villas. In ACF, Plot Size is set to appear only when Property Type is Villa. Open the panel on the villa page, and Plot Size is there. Switch Property Type to Apartment or Studio, and Plot Size disappears straight away. Switch back to Villa, and it returns.

You don't set anything up in Frontend Editor ACF for this to work. The rules come straight from your ACF field group, so any conditional logic you've already built carries over to the frontend panel.

### Matching the page to the panel

ACF conditional logic controls the fields in the panel, not what appears on the page. To show the Plot Size line only on villa listings, the container that holds it uses the **[Dynamic Rule](https://wpbuilderaddons.com/docs/dynific-addons-elementor/how-to/dynamic-rules-on-container/)** feature from Dynific Addons for Elementor.

In Elementor, select the Plot Size container and open the **DA PRO** tab. Under **Dynamic Rule**, turn on **Enable** and keep **Show/Hide** set to **Show**. Then set up a rule with **Type** as **ACF Choice**, **ACF Name** as **Property Type**, **Operator** as **Is Equal** and **Value** as **Villa**. The container now appears only when the listing's property type is Villa.

![Dynamic Rule settings on the Plot Size container in Elementor](https://wpvibes.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/dynamic-rules-on-elementor-container.png?_t=1793000977)Dynamic Rule settings on the Plot Size container in Elementor

With both rules in place, the panel and the page stay in step. Change Property Type from Villa to Apartment in the Frontend Editor ACF panel, click **Save changes**, and Plot Size disappears from both the panel and the listing.

## Which ACF field types can you edit from the frontend?

Frontend Editor ACF supports most standard [ACF field types](https://wpvibes.com/docs/frontend-editor-acf/get-start/supported-acf-field-types/). If your pages use common ACF fields, you can edit them from the frontend panel.

| Category | Supported field types |
| -------- | --------------------- |
| Text and content | Text, Textarea, Number, Range, Email, URL, Password, WYSIWYG Editor, oEmbed |
| Media | Image, File |
| Choice | Select, Checkbox, Radio Button, Button Group, True / False |
| Relational | Page Link |
| Date and time | Date Picker, Date Time Picker, Time Picker |
| Other | Color Picker |

## How do you customize the frontend editor panel?

You customize Frontend Editor ACF from **Settings > Frontend Editor ACF**.

**Allow Post Types** lists every post type on your site, from Posts and Pages to custom types like Property Listing. Tick the ones where the editor should appear, or leave them all unticked to show it everywhere. On a listing site, ticking only Property Listing keeps the Edit Fields button on listings and off the rest of the site.

The next three settings control how the panel looks. **Panel Position** opens it on the left or right, and **Default Panel Width** sets the width the panel starts at, in pixels. Editors can still drag the panel wider while they work. **Trigger Button Color** sets the color of the floating button so it can match your client's brand. Click **Save Settings** to apply your changes.

## Who can see and use the frontend editor?

Only logged-in users who can edit a post see the Edit Fields button and panel on that post. Visitors see the normal page, and Frontend Editor ACF doesn't load its editor scripts for them, so the frontend stays as light as before.

This makes client handovers simple. Give your client an account that can edit their listings, and they can update prices, photos and amenities from the page itself. There's no dashboard tour to give, and far less reason for them to dig through wp-admin.

## Ready to let clients edit from the page itself?

Now you know how to edit ACF fields from the frontend on a real listing page. The price, photo, amenities and button color all changed without leaving the page, and conditional logic kept the panel focused.

For agencies, that means fewer small update requests landing in your inbox. For clients, it means keeping their own content up to date without learning their way around wp-admin.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you edit ACF fields from the frontend without code?
Yes. Frontend Editor ACF adds an Edit Fields button to pages with ACF fields and opens them in a side panel on the live page. You install and activate the plugin, and it detects your existing field groups automatically, with no code or templates to write.
### Does Frontend Editor ACF work with the free version of ACF?
Yes. Frontend Editor ACF works with both the free version of Advanced Custom Fields and ACF Pro. Either version needs to be installed and active, and Frontend Editor ACF then reads the field groups assigned to each page.
### Do conditional fields work in the frontend panel?
Yes. Frontend Editor ACF follows the conditional logic rules from your ACF field groups. For example, a Plot Size field set to appear only for villas shows in the panel when Property Type is Villa. It hides as soon as you switch to Apartment or Studio.
### Can regular visitors see the Edit Fields button?
No. The button and panel only appear for logged-in users who can edit that post. Frontend Editor ACF doesn't load its editor scripts for visitors, so they see the normal page with no extra files added.
### Does Frontend Editor ACF work on pages built with Elementor?
Yes. The demo in this guide is an Elementor page that displays ACF fields with Dynific Addons for Elementor and Elementor's Button widget. Frontend Editor ACF edits the field values, and the Elementor layout shows the updated content.
### What happens if you close the panel without saving?
Frontend Editor ACF asks before closing whenever you have unsaved edits. A confirmation dialog lets you choose Keep editing to return to your changes or Discard changes to close the panel without saving. If nothing has changed, the panel closes right away.

Install [Frontend Editor ACF](https://wordpress.org/plugins/frontend-editor-acf/) on your next ACF build and hand your clients a site they can keep up to date on their own
